Youth
Issues Project
Overview
A major issue in rural communities on the prairies is the exodus
of their youth. After putting major investments of time, energy and
money into raising their children to adulthood, the community often
watches them leave for economic opportunities in larger centres.
Presumably this is happening to some degree in Swift Current given
the flat population statistics and significant aging seen in the
community.
The short-term goals for this committee were:
- Assess the role of existing organizations for youth.
- Support the Job Fair/Employer Showcase held in February, 2003.
- Hold a Youth Issues Forum (Grades 11, 12 to age 29).
The long-term goals are:
- Research possibility of an employer-youth networking system.
- Research the possibility of businesses being involved in the
University/College co-op program.
- Address and implement issues from the forum.
The expected outcome for this project is to reconnect and attract
youth to our community.
Progress to Date
The Youth Committee has surveyed over 400 youth and sought their
input. The goal was to identify key challenges and create opportunities
for youth to live and build a future in the community.
Committee developed and circulated flyers to promote youth to vote in the civic
election.
