Regional
Healthcare Project
Overview
When prompted, 27 percent of firms surveyed chose health care facilities
as a positive factor attractive to new and existing business. Three
of the six small groups at the Action Swift Current panel review
meeting selected the creation of a regional health care facility
as a priority area for the Leadership Team. Some of the implications
identified if a new health care facility was not created were:
losing health care professionals from the community, losing senior
population to regional centres with more modern facilities, migration
of clients to other regional centres, and ultimately some interruption
of health care service.
Established entities are working in the community to make a new
regional health care centre a reality. Action Swift Current will
be working with these entities.
The short-term goals for this project were:
- Create a letter to the Minister of Health lobbying for the development
of the hospital. (Enclose copy of final report).
- Begin communicating information on the status of the Regional
Health Centre.
The long-term goals for this project are:
- Lobby to help build the hospital.
- Help with the recruitment and retention of professionals for
the hospital in co-operation with other entities (e.g. HRSDC).
- Work towards the creation of an environment that sustains integrated
health care services encompassing extended entities (e.g. mental
health services).
The expected outcome of this project is the development of sustainable,
quality healthcare services to help ensure that the community of
Swift Current achieves growth and prosperity.
Progress to Date
The new $35 million dollar health care facility will have an extremely
important influence on the future of southwest Saskatchewan. Construction
is set to begin in February 2005 with completion in the spring of 2006.
The province will provide 65% of the funding while the city and surrounding
area will contribute the other 35%. The cost of construction is $30
million; equipment costs are expected to be approximately $5 million.
