Educational Enhancement Project
Overview
A common concern voiced by a number of firms in the open-ended data
collected during Phase I was that Swift Current sends its people
away for training only to have them settle down elsewhere. This "brain
drain" is a common problem among rural, prairie towns. Some members
of the Research Review Panel decided that the best defense was a
good offense; they suggested creating training programs in Swift
Current that could become known across the province and beyond.
The short-term goal of the Educational Enhancement project committee
was to conduct a SWOT analysis of adult education for the Southwest.
The long-term goals are:
- Address and implement the findings of the SWOT analysis.
- Facilitate joint-venturing between the public and private sectors
to meet education needs.
The expected outcomes of this project are:
- Attraction and retention of people to Swift Current and the southwest
region.
- Growth of Community College and private institutions.

Progress to Date
The business survey conducted by Action Swift Current identified
many labour shortages in the trades areas. Meetings held with representatives
from the Swift Current Comprehensive High School and the local Apprenticeship
Officer determined that many students have interests in the trades
but don't know which employers to go to. It is hoped a local registry
will help bridge the gap between the two. If you would like to have
your business listed please contact Action Swift Current.
Below you will find: the application form for the registry, Swift
Current Apprenticeship and Occupation Registry, and press releases.
The Committee met with the Regional College, Swift Current Comphrensive
High School, Cypress Health Region and Semi-Arid Research Centre
to discuss avenues of enhancing educational opportunities in southwest
Saskatchewan.
The Cypress Hills Regional College has increased its trades training
programs for the 2004/2005 school year. As well the Academy of Learning
has announced plans to build a new larger facility in Swift Current
and has also added some new programs in the health care field.
